Letterforms is the online instance of the Type Drawing elective taught at the Bachelor in Communication Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (FBAUP).

This website aims to support the activities held during classes, and promote the student’s results.

Students of the 2023 class during the first Lettering assignment presentation at room PS13 at FBAUP. Results are posted and subject to a group peer assessment and discussion.

This course has been created and has been taught by me, Pedro Amado, since its inception within the new course curriculum in 2023.

Pedro Amado holds a Ph.D. in Type Design in Digital Information and Communication Platforms from the University of Aveiro (2014), an MFA in Open Source Type Design and Distribution in Multimedia Art (2007), and a degree in Communication Design from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (2002).

He is currently the Director of the Master’s Program in Graphic Design and Editorial Projects (MDGPE), Associate Professor of Typography and Typeface Design, Web Design at FBAUP.

Member of the direction, integrated researcher in the Computation Hybrid Practices and Culture program and coordinator of the Ligatures special interest research project/group of the i2ADS Research Institute. ID+ collaborator, founding member of the ATIPO typography association, and country delegate for the ATypI international association.


Passionate for digital tinkering, letterpress printing, calligraphy and contemporary writing forms, and digital photography, he focuses his research and development activities on typography, type design and editorial design, computational and post-digital design, as well as human-computer interaction.
